The Correct Way Of Idle Adjustment on a 1980 W107

Hi All,

I am slowly getting my 1980 450 SL running like a new car. The body will be the last of my task.
As told, I bought this car a few months back and it was in a garage under every piece of yard furniture and tools that you can think of and was off the road for close to 12 years. Yes, the body has its share of dents and scratches but 63,000 original miles with a real clean interior (but filthy) was my buying point.
I had the car in the Me/Be dealership in March for the free sub frame recall and I also had them adjust the lambda as they still have a machine for it change brake fluid and flush & reup the anti freeze.
Last week I did coil, cap, rotor, wires and plugs. All filters have been changed (fuel, air, oil).
The car runs so smooth that I cannot feel it idle, but it is idling too low and it feels like it is going to stall.(about 500 rpm and I think that it should be 600-700).
Can someone please tell me the correct way to bring up the idle of the motor? Can I do it without having to reset the lambda?

Thanks
Jack

Jack:

You can adjust the idle speed using the brass idle screw next to the auxillary air valve. Technically, you should also check the emissions after adjusting the speed. You can use your judgement on this; are you satisfied with the way it runs after adjusting the speed? Check job # 73-100 for the whole procedure.

The 73-100 refers to the specific Mercedes Benz service manual job number. You can open up a paper copy of the manual to that job number and it covers the task at hand. As an alternate, you can look in the CD ROM version of the manual for that same job number. The CD ROM is a collection of pdf files for all the jobs in the paper manual.
