600SL ASR Problems
On a 93 600SL, has anyone else had problems with ASR light coming on (causing car to go into LH mode)? Dealer tells me I need new throttle actuator ($4k), and I only had those replaced 15000 miles ago.

Many dealers, and even other shops, start by telling the customer they need a new throttle actuator. This gives them a sort expectations budget to start from, i.e. weeds out the people who don't want to spend any money. It's sort of a worst case prognostication, and it's ususally wrong. Faulty throttle actuator is terribly overdiagnosed and very unlikely the problem in your case given the recent replacement, which is all a long way of saying get a new shop.

The $4k price is for each actuator. Price does not include install, but that isn't much, as it is located right on top of the engine.

ASR problems
I have the same problem with my 500SL, getting worse with time. There have been numerous posts by people all over the world involving many Mercedes models built between 1990 and 1995, that use a similar ASR system. This is a poor design which Mercedes do not admit to, and my local dealer service centre told me that they haven't seen this before, which I don't believe. I am told that because my car is a 1990 model, the computer diagnostics don't remember the fault, and trial and error part replacement is the only way to fix the problem. Is that correct? The only thing is that most of the parts are outrageously expensive. Would any one know which parts are the most common to malfunction in order from most frequent to least, so that I can start the trial and error replacements.

Allan-
Unfortunately I have much experience with this issue. There are typically two culprits--the throttle actuator or the ASR switch. The actuator is very expensive, and you might be able to find a disable switch for the ASR unit. Beckman Technologies rebuilds the actuators with a one year warranty (same as MB). As for your dealer telling you they haven't seen the problem--right!!! I have contacted 3 dealerships in South Florida and they average 5 a week. |

The throttle actuator is 750GBP from Benz in the UK. I cured my ASR issues by three cable ties - cost 1USD!
Check your accelerator outer-sheath is OK. Check your accelerator cable is adjusted correctly Check Jim's web site for more info http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_asr.html Lots of good links here so follow them and read. SEARCH in this forum as there are a several excellent posts regarding technical ASR fixes. Hope this helps Lea

ASR fault
Thanks for the advice. Am I on the right track by suggesting trial and error replacement of parts?

Allan--I found a shop in South Florida that specializes in these problems. They will diagnose and rebuild your units for substantially less. When I dropped off my car with them, they told me right away that the actuator wires fry due to heat (specially on the V12 motors, which generate lots of heat). The second culprit they thought was the wiring harness, which also deteriorates due to heat, and is very easy to check. In short, trial and error is probably the answer, but try to replace the expensive parts last!!!

I . . . finally . . . had my original ETA rebuilt.
Sent it off to Bob Beckmann at Beckmann Industries. It was returned last week with the 'bad' parts included so I could see what went 'wrong' inside. Will post some added pics into Menu#24 showing what was done. Of interest, it wasn't the Ref Pot assy that was bad. It was the electromagnetic clutch that burned and, of course, the infamous biodegradable wires in the input/output harness that plugs into the engine harness. Both were not what I expected. I'd suggest you check them out and see what they can do for you. |

Jim, how was your car driving before you sent it in? Any fault codes?

If you mean this 'ETA', mine is starting to act up again. This is the replacement ETA (new) installed about three years ago. Every once in a while, I get a Diag Module, DTC #6 (Idle speed faulty) but no other codes. Also if the car is hot, the idle speed may hunt; go from 525rpm up to 750rpm or so and then slowly work its way back to 550rpm. So that's why I had my old ETA repaired. . . just in case. I've checked the harness and all appears well. Did I answer your question?? |
