Fuel tank screen
Hello-
I know there's supposed to be a extra screen inside the tank, and I'm wondering if that can be removed/replaced from the bottom of the car - or do I have to remove the tank? It's a 76 450sl with 135,000 miles. I'm replacing the filter and all the fuel hoses on the back end, and so I see the feed line to the tank. Just not sure about getting to that screen filter. Thanks. |

It should be removable from the bottom. But on my 560SL the tank is shifted slightly such that I cant. At minimum I would have to loosen the tank and re shift it.

I replaced the fuel strainer in both my slcs and it is not a big job.
Drain/syphon as much gas as possible out of the tank. put the car up on jack stands. Get a bucket under the car so that when you get the strainer out you can catch the gas that you missed draining out. I think the nut for the strainer is about a 42 mm but it can be removed with a pipe wrench or Channel locks. Both of mine were very tight. The nut is fairly thin as can be difficult to get a hold of. Be careful when cleaning the screen. It is rather delicate. New screens aren't very expensive but if you can clean the old one with carb. cleaner give it a go. Oh, and remember to have a friend and a fire extinguisher standing by. |
