Ultimate SL Stereo
Has anyone tried Performance Products' "Ultimate SL Stereo"? They replace the dash speakers with 2-way midrange/tweeter speakers. The rear shelf is removed and replaced with a custom-built full enclosure that is ported and baffled with two 8" woofers. No holes anywhere other than the slits in the front of the new rear shelf to allow the subs to come through; it looks almost exactly like the original rear shelf and is carpeted to match the rest of your interior. Speakers are made by BMI, price is $679, and installation is DIY.
I'm tempted, because it doesn't ruin the original look. Bu I don't know much about stereo systems and know nothing about BMI. Any advice would be appreciated. Glenn |

I'm thinking of going that route. My local installer was gong to make me a custom cabinet for the rear deck with molded fibreglass bottom, etc... Whole thing with that, radio, amps, front speakers, was going to be like $3K... YIKES! Can't swing it right now. Even if I dont' like the drivers of the sub you mention (and I probably won't), I know where I can get raw drivers to match the cabinet volume, would probably seal the cabinet (it's a huge cavity and doesn't need the venting), and create something killer for less then the custom route probably. This ultimate SL steroa cabinets just won't be as kick ass. Eh, I should be happy saving probably $1G tho.
Edit: What's with them. I can't find the product searching for woofer, speaker or stereo. Could you post the link to that product?

For some reason, I don't think they have the system online. Go to the website for Performance Products (www.performanceproducts4benz.com) and request a catalogue. The Spring/Summer 2006 catalogue shows the system on p.87.

In my 83 280SL (R107) I put in an Alpine CD player, a set of decent 3.5 front speakers and a pair of 6x9's into a stock rear shelf. Total outlay, around $300.
Sounds great . Rear shelf came from someone who had put in a kinderseat, so I can always return to stock with my original one. Only thing I should have gotten was a radio with an automatic volume function. In addition to that, the sound quality changes constantly with the top down depending upon speed, traffic, etc.
