Ignition Distributor Spring, how replace?

Looking to replace the internal distributor shaft return spring since I am seeing way too much advance by 3k rpm's (close to 40!). Timing at idle is spot on (16 degrees). That is what I think the shuddering/slight delayed response at lower rpm range (below 3500rpm) is coming from, wrong advance.

Some have said the only way to repair is replace the whole distributor assembly. True? If I can just replace the spring, where can I find one?

it is not a difficult job. the dist has to be removed and the point plate removed. it is held in with screws and is intuitively obvious to disassemble. removing and replacing the screws is not hard either. one spring is probably broken. if lucky it might somehow be just unhooked. (unlikely) if you cannot buy new springs you can probably find some used. all bosch distributors with the same advance characteristics will probably have the same or very similar springs.

on my 74 bmw bavaria i mixed and matched advance weights and springs from older benzes and vws and made it advance like a non smog engine. it really made just a huge difference in its prerformance.

if you cannot find new springs pm me. i might have a few still lying about.
