Am I Crazy or What? - Visors

Here's my idea for my sagging balloon visors: Take two flat pieces of plywood slightly larger thatn the visors. Put bolts in each corner and spacers between the two pieces. Slide them over the visor and cut a few threads on the seam and blow in that insulating foam to give them some rigidity. They aren't faded or anything - just sag like gramma's underwear. Comments?

I was flipping the pages on a newly arrived MB parts catalog last night and noticed the price for OEM SL sun visors. WTF? Creativity on repair would have to be paramount here. I have never closely examined SL visors are they made of iron ore from meteors?

Smack, I sucessfully fixed ours by cutting the vinyl cover at the seam from the mounting bracket to the plastic thing. If you turn the shaft 180deg to unlock it --then just pull it out. You then can remove the frame from insuide the visor. I picked up some 1/8 in foam rubber from an auto upholstery shop
(scrap bin FREE)and used spray contact cement to glue 2 layers on each side of the frame. Trim around the ends with a sissor and reinsert into the vinyl cover. Work the shaft back in and using a cement for vinyl slightly overlap the seam and glue. When reinstalled in the car you cannot see the seam and the visors look like new.
Good luck.

Hi Smack,
Your idea sounds interesting to me - I have four of those visors, and if your idea works, it would make my cars look a lot better! Why don't you try it out and let us know if it works? I have the same problem as you, the visors look like a deflated balloon, but are the right shade, etc.

Gonna try

I'm going to give it a try next week. I will report back in on my sanity.

Visors

How did the work go on the visors? I have the same problem...the inside has deteriorated to the point that out a spore like cloud of foam "poofs" from the visors each time I move them. One other question - is there a trick to removing the visor? I removed the screw mounting the visor to the pillar post (or whatever part of the car that's called) and was afraid of damaging something as it was difficult to pull off. Thanks. Gray

removing visor

I think there are two screws holding the visor mounting bracket onto the car.
