380 SL timing chain
Okay, I received all the advice about changing the chain. Now i'm ready. I decided to go with a single chain. Where/ what is the best source of information , i.e. a step by step instructional procedure for this> Also has any one dealt with "German Star" for parts? What brand chain is the best? Do the lower rails have to be changed? It seems that the upper rails and chain can be changed by just removing the valve covers. Is this correct?
Thanks for any info. |

Page62 provided the link for the step by step instructions in your earlier post. The same procedures apply for the single row as does the double row. The only thing I did different is I bought some large strong zip ties instead of using vice-grips to secure the chain to the sprockets when I did mine.
You are correct, only the upper guides are accessable with the valve covers off. You must remove the timing chain cover to change the lower guides. In order to remove the timing chain cover, you will need to either support the engine and remove the sub-frame or remove the engine. VERY seldom do the lower guides need to be replaced. It is usually the upper guides that fail. Don't know about German Star but Phil can supply all the parts you will need, contact him under the Buy Parts Cat on this forum. He is reasonable and you will get the right parts. You should also replace your tensioner. Good luck, let us know how you make out.

This is correct the lowers generally do not need to be changed. But if you do change them, it would be foolish not to do the double row conversion and replace the oil pump chain. John Roncallo |
