Need opinions & wisdom on a 1999 SLK 230

One of my employees is lusting over a 99 SLK 230, 62k miles looks very clean. Service history is unknown. Owner is asking 15k. She hopes to get it for 13k.

How are these cars as far as reliability?

Do they need a lot of work at this age and mileage?

I have several 126's, a 124 and a 107 and they need a constant diet of care and maintenance. She is single and does not need a car that is going to give trouble.

Anybody who has any experience with this model please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.

I've posted on a similar topic recently. Here is a precis of what I said then.

My mother is on her second SLK230, first was a 1996, second a 2000. Both bought new. Both serviced at the dealer according to the maintenance schedule. Neither babied. Both stored out doors. The 2000 presently has about 90k on the clock.

Reliability is A1. Mechanically and electronically they are very simple and strong. Check the roof works and does not leak and check the body for accident damage, especially in the rear. I bet the roof is the devil to fix if it has been shunted in the rear. Check for rust under the wheel arches (although MB should fix this for free). The wheels all tarnish, water gets under the laquer. The paint on the interior trim can wear.

My mother has put a new cat and rear exhaust section on hers (to be expected at her mileage). It has also recently had a new driver's side window. Otherwise it has been A1. I think these cars are seriously underrated and seriously cheap.

Thanks so much for the info.

I have no experience with the tops.
Do they just lift off like the 107's?
Or do they retract into the body? I have never seen one work.

The top retracts into the boot, folding above the rear window. It appears to be a very good mechanism, better than that on the R230. You should simply make sure that it works a few times and doesn't leak.

Thanks. Now I know and I will look closely at this car for proper operation.
