Does anybody out there have a used third light for sale or know where I can find one. I can get a new one from phil but I would like to save some money as this car has turned into a money pit.

An '84 has a third brake light??? I thought 1986 was the first year...

I assume that if you are putting this on a 380SL, that you are doing this to an modified 380 that has a drilled trunk lid or a lid from an 86 to 89. Or you intend to drill your own trunk lid.

If you are replacing you need to know if you have an 86-87 style (mounted foward on trunk) or an 88-89 style (mounted aft on trunk). If you are modifiying you can use either but the 86-87 will be a lot easyer to drill for.

I have the "big" one on my 560SL and I have a later version for my 380SL which I intend to install. Be aware that the "big" third light had a service bulletin on it where it was subject to replacement due to cracking of the housing (like mine did, not bad, but annoying). The small, newer version is supposedly no longer available new.

I have a 1984 euro 500sl with the big light and it cracked in many places and finally fell apart. Would the service bulliten apoply here?

I don't know - the minus is that it is a Euro, meaning that apparently as far as MBUSA is concerned is not a car built and sold by MB; the plus factor is that it is a "safety" item, and they might replace it anyway.
