Help!!! 1991 300sl Oil Change
I am so sorry to be asking this really simple question, but "WHERE IN THE HELL IS THE OIL FILTER CANISTER LOCATED ON THIS AUTO!" This is my girlfriend's '91 300SL which she recently bought in Texas and drove back to Seattle. I wanted to change the oil and filter for her, but cannot find the filter canister. I have a 1982 380SEC & 1981 280E....the canisters were right up front, passenger side on these cars....but, the hell if I can find the one on her car!!! LOL!!! Please can anyone give me alittle guidance here it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have been using Castrol in my cars, but I have seen talk about Mobil 1, 0w-40w....is that what I should be using??? Her car has 109,000 on it and mine have 165,000 and 145,000. Thanks. Tobias

Look next to the valve cover near the rear, driver's side, between the air cleaner housing and the first firewall. It is much smaller than the older Benzes. Maybe 3" across, and you need a special wrench for it.
Do a search here for "what oil" and you will see every type, brand, source, size, weight, coler, and taste of oil recomended. Use the Castrol if that's what you like. It will do just fine.

Fred, thanks tons now I have my project for this evening....and dude, damn is that boat for real!!!??? OMG!!! I'm gonna let my girlfriend check it out since she is a total boat nut...I think she's gonna cream on herself when she sees it, LOL!!!
Also, I see you have a 300SL with 160K on it, anything special to look out for? Since we got the car I had the Headgasket and Radiator replaced. The Headgasket needed it and the new Radiator solved some overheating problems, its running perfectly now. I understand that MB makes a Orange Coolant that is specifically made for aluminum radiators to prevent the corrosion associated with the standard Green coolant...know anything about this? Thanks for the tips on oil. Tobias

If the car has SLS, you'll want a litre of the correct SLS fluid in the garage just in case. Same with the soft top fluid. And the orange coolant. Mine's been pretty much trouble free, but it has developed the head gasket oil leak that I'll have to repair soon. And I've had a couple of soft top cylinders fail and I replaced them. Easy to replace. Now there's a guy here on this site that fixes them for about 30 bucks or so. I'm thinking of sending all of them to him as a preventative measure. My lock pump stopped working just before the winter, so I haven't had time to troubleshoot it. But the car sure is fun to drive!
