|
Lighting the outside temp gauge
Can anyone tell me where to have the light fixed in the outside temp gauge? I would love to have it lit up at night, its the only interior light that doesn't work. Thanks alot.

I don't think that the gauge was designed to be opened for repair. Nonetheless, it CAN be opened, with great difficulty, and the bulb can be replaced with even more difficulty. The "trick" is to very carefully open the crimped bezel on the front with a small, thin screwdriver, very evenly and only a little at a time so as not to mark up any surface of the bezel visible when installed, until it can pop off. Once the rear screws are removed, the gauge component can be removed. The bulb is mounted on a PCB, it's soldered in, and it's very difficult to get to. I don't even think it's a 12V bulb.
I did this twice, but only to repaint the needle.

Has anyone priced out a new gauge? Complete with new bulb and repainted needle?

Never saw one with a needle. All I have seen were digital. They are costly. Take out the instrument cluster then it is easily removed. The bulb can be bought at Radio Shack for less than a dollar. If you can use a soldering iron at all it will be easy.

Well, I took out the outside temp gauge and pulled it all apart (thank you Strife) and found the burnt bulb. Got a new bulb from Radio Shack, 12 volt, 50 ma, tested it before soldering, then soldered it in and put the gauge back together - sorry no pictures, IT WORKED! I always amaze myself when things actually work when I'm done. If I could only get the alarm system working without going off when I walk away from the car. This job can be done, it takes alot of patience to pull the bezel off, that was okay, but puttinjg the bezel back on is where I had the problem, tapped it with a screwdriver and dented it. Can hardly see it but I know its there.
