Fan Removal on a 560SL

It looks like the fan and fan shroud need to come off in order to access the crank bolt (for turning engine manually). Does anyone have a recommended procedure for this? Do the 4 bolts come out of the waterpump flange, or does the fan and viscous damper have to come off? Not much room to work here on the 560SL. Is there a technique to get the shroud off without removing the fan? If so, I think I can get to the crank bolt. Thanks.

You will remove the fan and shroud together. Remove the two clips at the top of the shroud and then you can rest the shroud over the fan. Remove the four bolts on the water pump shaft and remove the fan and viscous clutch as one unit. I can remove the fan in less than five minutes. Of course, I have had it off about five times. Use an open end wrench on the four bolts.

Thanks BD! I plan to hit them with PB Blaster first.
Do the belts have to be loosened? Is the pulley held on with the same bolts?

I use a "pully wrench". I got it at Harbor Freight. It uses a V belt to grab and is perfect for turning over an engine manually. No need to remove anything.

How does it work?

By the way, when I did my chain/slides I managed to get a socket in there without removing the radiator. It is atight fit, but it can be done.

It looks like any wrench with a long handle and it uses a V belt that is tightened around the pulley grove. Move the handle, the pulley turns. Similar to a chain wrench in principal.
