Who uses synthetics?

This is actually responding to a point on another thread.

I remember asking MB if I should go with synthetics on my SLC, and the general consensus of the service advisors at the 800 # was no. (This goes back a few years.) I also remember some articles in Car & Driver in the early 90's which said the same for cars for which it was not the approved oil. Something about the particles being too small for the filter or something. (I forget.)

Are you using synthetics? I'm specifically interested in the 450 engine, but I'm interested in all feedback.

My car does not get driven much; about 2K miles/year.

I have used fully synthetic on my 450 which has hydraulic valve lifters. I am not sure on what should be used, but I think that todays better oils are fine and so far no problems nor leaks. I also only drive about 5000 km a year.

I have used Mobile 1 in the engine and AT for the past several years with no problem. I drive 7,ooo +- miles per year.

I have a newer SL, and it reccomends to use synthetic in the motor. In my 88 300TE, I just use regular oil.

My local MB dealer (Silver Star MB) recommends Mobil 1 and has a display in the service area saying this. It's what I use in my 450SL.

Same thing: my newer MB's get the Mobil 1. The SL gets good old dino oil.

I use Mobil 1 in my expensive Mercedes engines, even though they probably don't need it. (Dino goes in the rest of the fleet) I figured to eliminate oil as a source of problems. Also, I've read anecdotal data that suggest the synthetics greatly reduce wear so my small brain reasons that using them will push off the overhaul date to sometime after I die. I like the 15W50 Mobil 1; it doesn't seem to thin out when hot so the oil pressure gauge stays pegged most of the time.

Anyone using Mobil 1 at the 0W-XX weight? I'm curious. I've been using a synthetic blend 10W40 in my 300SL, but my MB independent service garage has recommended and is using only Mobil 1 "0W" now. It is manufactuer approved for use in all Daimler / Chrysler vehicles. Geez, it's thin as water at room temperature. But even if it costs twice as much, if I only need to change it 1/3 as often, it's a saving in "hassle" time. What do you think?

Read all about it!
