Euro 107 500SL Timing Chain

Have a 1980 500SL Euro. Needs a new timing chain. I am trying to find the right selection, but of course all they have are US listings at ********az where I shop. Does it use the same timing chain and guide rails as say a 1984 500SEL, or as a 1980 450SL? Any input appreciated.

Excuse me while I become Moderator for a moment.

This type of question is inappropriate. You should not be putting Forum members in the position of answering a question that should be answered by your supplier. If ********az is unable or unwilling to check euro spec cars, then you should find another supplier of which there are plenty. Why are you asking Forum members to a) do supplier's research, and b) risk your ire if they give a wrong answer and you get the wrong part? This is a question for your supplier - you are their customer and they get paid to find you the right part.

This is a very different question than asking about a part on e-bay or a part found at a garage sale, or asking which brand is better, or which supplier is cheaper or has better service. Those are legitimate questions. But asking us to do your supplier's research is not.

I'd suggest you call Phil at Fastlane (click on the Buy Parts tab at the top for more info).

Since he's the sponsor of this forum, it's considered a courtesy not to discuss or recommend other vendors. And since Phil is considered first-rate, this isn't a bad thing at all!

I am not a moderator- but I am active member. I think anyone can ask anything about the mechanical aspects of any MB here and not be asked to not ask. It's internet advice and all advice should be taken with a grain of salt. If I give the wrong advice to someone is it my fault they took it and screwed up? No. If the asker thinks it is then perhaps a lawyer would get involved and then were would we be? If the asker asked the same question at the local bar and took a patrons advice would the patron be held liable? Anyways- the m117 is a m117- there is no difference in timing chains as far as I know from euro to domestic models. I've had both my 560SL and my euro 500SEL chains done- my indie did not indicate there is any difference. Give the vin to MB dealer and ask for the timing chain cost and then ask for the part #. Try the same thing with performance parts and phil and rusty. Phil is the sponsor here so buy from him is the official line. If you are like a Geico caveman then buy from whoever you like. Let us know what you found out so that others who may have the same question will look at this thread and learn.

I agree. We should be able to discuss or ask anything on this forum. We already have enough control over our lives in so many other ways. Help us all if we have those restrictions here.

Phil put together a list of parts needed for the timing chain replacement for me awhile back. In fact, here is the quote Phil provided. The price for the package looks to be pretty decent.

Item Number: 107046TCK
Main Category: MB
Sub Category:
Description: 5.0 TIMING CHAIN KIT 0009977694 CHAIN 1170501816 GUIDE 1170521016 GUIDE 1170520816 GUIDE 11705250916 GUIDE X 2 1170501616 GUIDE 1160501811 TENSONER 1170520374 GUIDE PINS X 6 1160161321 VALVE COVER GASKET 1160161421 VALVE COVER GASKET 6219970040 SEAL X 2 0049978048 SEAL X 2 1209970346 CRANKSHAFT SEAL 37461 LOCK-TITE SEALER
Manufacturer: SSF:
List Price: $543.27
Your Price: $ 329.00
Core Price:

I've found that a lot of these parts places won't take the time or make the effort to come up with the right part number for the Euro models. Phil has never balked at being asked. I STRONGLY encourage folks here to support Fastlane!

Fastlane is a business not a non-profit organization. A person would support Red Cross. I'm glad Fastlane's expenses includes the forum, and people like his service and parts sales. I assume that list of parts was for the euro timing chain? Now someone could check if the USA version of part numbers is the same!

That quote was for the Euro timing chain. The engine is a 117.962

Hey, call or e-mail Phil and ask if it's the same.

Thanks Gang!

The (re-phrased) technical question has to do with 117 engines. In 1980, there was a transition from the 450 engine to 500 (Euro) and 380 (a 116 engine) in the US. The 500 engine was not introduced to the US until about 1984, and then only in the 126 chassis. The timing chain set-up (as regards the rails, as best I can tell) is different for a 450 engine and the later (in the US) 500 engines, although both are "117." My question essentially is when the transition occurred in the timing rails? Would a 1980 500SL engine (#208 off the production line) have a timing chain rail set-up of the 450 engine (which it si chronologically closer to) or to the later 500SEL/500SEC in the 126 models? Does this have practical implications in terms of parts acquisition? Obviously it does, as most places in the US (including Mercedes Benz dealers) don't have the information on the Euro models.
