Why your 107 hard top might not fit right

I know that this is the wrong time of year to be posting this, since everyone is about to pull there tops off for the summer, but if I don't write this now, I'll forget. So here it is.

When I put my top on in early November, it was not quite right on the right side. It was just slightly higher on the right, and it also rattled and squeaked a bit. I should have dealt with it then, but it wasn't that big of a deal so I left it.

The other evening, I decided to investigate. I unlatched the top and propped the rear up with a piece of wood so I could observe the way the side latches work.

With the handle in the latch and pointing toward the rear, the pin in the shaft should be pointing front/rear. As you rotate the handle toward the front of the car, the shaft will rotate 90 degrees. As it turns, the pin will engage a slot in a bracket. Since the slot is angled, as the shaft turns, the top is pulled down tight against the seal. So far so good.

But if you look at the shaft, you will see that there are two 22mm nuts. They look like they are used to adjust the length of the shaft and are tightened against each other to secure the adjustment. But if they are not tight, you can rotate the handle and the shaft won't move - only the nut will. If the shaft doesn't move, then the top won't get pulled down tight.

This is what was happening to my top on the right side.

So with the top off, it's a good time to make sure that the nuts are tight together. You can also loosen them and adjust the length of the shaft to tighten or loosen the fit of the top. It might also be a good idea to put some grease on the pins and the holding slots.

top ideas

Hi

Sounds like a great job to do when you take the top off - 'cause it's likely to be sunny and warm - when you're putting it back on it's because it's got cold and wet and you don't feel like doing that sort of job.

Something else to do at the same time is clean grease and adjust the rear roof latch, cables and levers as the'll be quite dry and will stick (like mine has this spring!!) and you'll have a dead fiddly job getting it off next time!!

Great thing hindsite isn't it.

cheers

Jim
