oil leaking from ceiling in "91 500 sl"
I know the oil is seeping around the driverside visor area, I spose its coming from a cylinder in there that locks the convertable top, does this mean I need a NEW cylinder or can I have a local hydrolic repair shop repair this ??

You need a new soft top cylinder. Replace the one on the other side while you are at it. Mark

Your problem is common after these cars age. Most replace them with new. I seem to recall someone posting on this site that they had "rebuilt" one, but perhaps they were talking about the hydraulic lift cyinder.
It is highly recommended that you sevice both of them once one fails as the other one will likely be soon to fail as well. If you know a good hydraulic shop it might be worth a try!

They are not that expensive. Replace both with new. If you search the posts, there is one the gives instuctions and pictures.

I posted a DIY with pics, you can find it in the DIY links. It isn't a hard process if you have the right tools and some time. One suggestion is there is a guy in olathe kansas named Dennis Fickins that rebuilds these for 10 or 20 bucks a cylinder. He is on here sometime so he may see your post and respond. The only downside is having your ride torn apart for a couple of days. I got mine from phil on here for 110 each side shipped. Not a bad deal but in the future if a cylinder goes out I will Send them to Dennis. He rebuilds all of them not just the front.

Chris, aka 'snowbilt' suggestion that you have the cylinders rebuilt is the best, easiest and least expensive way to go. Dennis rebuilds better than new with a 3 yr. warranty for $30@ + shipping. Also, if one side has gone out, the other is a matter of time. Send them both. Dennis turns these around next day after receipt so you'll have them back quickly. Follow Chris' great instructions on getting these cylinders out and back in. Dennis' contact info is: Dennis Ficken 16285 S. UPDATE: I took both fluid cylinders to a local hydraulic repair shop and they put new seals in them in under an hour, $20 each straight up--work fine now
""What kind of fluid runs through this convertable setup, I might need to get more fluid added to that box under the hood ?"" |

Good job!
Most here insist on the real MB Convertible Top Fluid from the dealer... The reservoir is under the spare tire on my 1992 and should be the same for you. Congratulations!

under the spare tire ?? are you sure...I looked under the hood, driverside front of car area, there is a brass colored metal box with several tiny metal hoses coming out of and it sure looks like hydraulic lines to me (RIGHT beside the ABS control) I'll look in the trunk tomorrow, I have just purchased this car and still learning the different surprises around this vehicle...

I am certain it is under the spare tire on mine. Remove the tire and you will find a plastic cover in the center of the spot where the tire was. Remove that cover and you will find the hydraulic pump and reservoir. It is a strange place to hide it...
You may be seeing the ABS Pump that is under the hood. It is located right behind the Left Front Headlight.
