Wink My new 500sl

I posted a weeks ago about looking for a 560sl. I have just bought the newer 1997 500sl of ebay. What do you think http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280105960952&sspagename=ADME:B:AAQ:CA:1

Those who own a 500sl how do you like driving yours?

Thankyou!

Kayla

I haven't been following the eBay auctions, but looks like you got one helluva good deal -- even if you allow for no hard top and allowing for some things to be wrong that the seller didn't disclose.

I don't particularly like driving my SL500 (1999). With the top down there is too much cowl shake and too much vibration through the steering.

Good car, great price, excellent location of seller

Real good price for one in a desirable color, with the desirable chromed AMG wheels, too, and the best engine for this car. These are high quality cars, boulevard cruisers capable of sustained high speed, very safe.

You'll need to get a good rim and tire (from a junkyard is cheapest), a hardtop and hardtop hoist or stand. Also, it would be good to obtain the First Aid kit and Mercedes tool kit the car came with.

If there are no records with the car, get an owner's manual and then have your mechanic check the condition of belts and hoses, change fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid) as necessary. Start a baseline for maintenance.

If you are lucky, you will get an extra set of keys and the Books and records with the car. If not, order the Owners Manual from your dealer and get a bottle of touch up paint while you are at it.....

Chances are that this one is a VERY good car, having come from Orange County, California, a very wealthy area, with lots of car loving, wealthy, owners, good weather, (no salted, rusty or rotted cars) and many good Mercedes shops that kept the cars up.

I purchased my Benz from an Orange County Mercedes dealer and over 10 years later the car has proved to be a good one.

Since this California car is less than 15 years old, and I think you said you are in Canada, there may be some issues or difficulties importing and registering it, you can get good information at www.canadiandriver.com, eh?

About 20 years ago one of the U.S. car magazines compared the 560SL to the earlier SLs which inlcuded a 280SL, a 190SL, and a first-generation 300SL. If I remember correctly, they liked driving the 300SL best.

I've never driven that 300SL or a 190SL, but I have driven the others as well as the R230 and the R129 (of course). I like the current SL best.

Looks like a good car at a reasonable price. It definitly is the right color. I see you switched from a 107 to a 129. My feeling are this.

I like the styling of the 107's more than anything. I also like the more old time race car feel of the 107's. Aside from all that bang for the buck I consider the 129's especially 1996 and up to be the deals of the centry. For some reason they are not maintaining value. Its almost like everyone who had one since new suddenly had to ditch it as soon as the 230's came out. I belive the 129s very much under valued at this time and these cares are probably a good investment.

looks like a nice car.

the missing hardtop is a puzzle. what happened to it?

they are pretty complex and expensive to take care of. that is why they are cheap to buy now. eventually they will go up after a couple more versions come out.....if too many werent built.

Great car. I love the 129's. I don't have one (yet, at least), but would like to. I was under the impression the chrome wheels were only available on the SL600 model. Maybe the PO changed them. I'd have to have the hard top, if it were mine. I'd leave it on all the time.

Good cat

Looks like a good car but it it might have been repainted? The paint on the doors specifically appear to have a slight hase on MB original paint they look more like glass? Get ready to spend at least $1000 in getting it perfect struts, leaks, AC etc.

I have one bought it at 131k and needed about $1K to bring it up to par.
