Line up the cam mark on the right cam on compression stroke. Check the other cam mark. They should both line up but don't be too concerned yet. Look at the timing marks on the balancer. Should be at zero. I think 4 to six degrees off is with spec. Maybe someone else knows exactly.

The guides on your SL are metal. Don't replace them. The tensioner was the weak spot on my '72 and '73.

Timing chain guide for my 83' 380 SL
 
Hi guys, I want to replace the timing chain on my 1983 380 SL (already upgraded to double chain) but I can't seem to find the chain guide tool. Does anyone know where I can find it?

@alkraut In the second set of pictures, what is that semi-circular metal thing that holds the chain to the sprockets called? It looks like a much safer, easier, and quicker way to ensure the chain stays where it should.
