380 SL Air Conditioning Problem

The AC in my 380SL suddenly stopped working the other day. (I live in Arizona and it is starting to get hot)! I was driving along, the AC was blowing cold air and all of a sudden it just stopped cooling. Now when I turn on the AC, the compressor runs but after a few seconds the compressor shuts off. I checked around and don't see any signs of leaks. I had the system checked out and charged a couple of weeks ago and my indy said that the freon was low but he couldn't find any obvious leaks. I am wondering what this problem sounds like. Is there any tests I should make before I bring it back to my guy.

Sounds like you have a leak and the compressor has been shut down by the system to prevent buring it up.
You mentioned the AC comes on, but briefly....does the blower come on too?
Could be the push buttons.....
More likely a leak somewhere....

From your profile your 380 is an '81 with the dreaded servo setup. There are many things that can go wrong as you probably know. One check is to see if the compressor will come on in DEF, which bypasses most of the servo and amplifier business. If it won't come on in DEF, you probably have a leak or other mechanical problem with the AC. If it does, then there is something wrong with the controls and the compressor clutch is not getting a signal to engage.

I forgot to mention that I have the UT ACCII Upgrade installed. I agree it sounds like a leak and the compressor is shutting down. I don't have a very good place to work on the car so I will have to bring it in. Thanks!!

My indy diagnosed the problem to be the compressor seal leaking. He gave me a $1500 est for a new compressor, flush, dryer, etc. I brought it to a AC shop and they had the same diagnosis and $1200 est for the same. Neither will replace the bad seal. Estimates seems high, for a common GM compressor but it looks like a lot of wrenching. It's getting hot here! I'll get it fixed next week.
