300SL air pump whine.

My 1991 300SL has developed an annoying whine which is coming from the right front side of the engine and varies in pitch with engine speed. I suspect either the belt idler wheel pulley bearing or the air pump bearing. I can't tell just by sticking my head in there which it is. The air pump pulley has a clutch which is not engaged at idle, so it just free wheels. Of course the air pump is $500 vs $50 for the idler wheel, so I hope it is the idler. Anyone in the group have any advice as to how to isolate the bad bearing? Anyone ever change the air pump? What's the best way to take tension off of the belt? Thanks

Or it could be the alternator too.

Remove the belt - if it is the idler, you'll feel it when you spin the idler.

If the air pump freewheels without electric - disconnect it and see if the whine goes away, then plug it back in and see if it comes back. The plug is located on the shock tower behind a plastic shield.

While the belt is off, spin the alternator. It should spin freely.

Thanks.... But I am wondering if there is a way to relax the fan belt without actually removing it entirely. I can do that on my Jeep which has a spring loaded "cam" you can flip over with a BFW. On the MB, the fan shroud makes getting to things on the front of the engine difficult.

On my 300sl, the engine side of the shroud is removable. Look closely, you pull out a plastic holding thingy, rotate it about 15 degrees to the right, move it toward the engine, remove the two spring clips, lift the shroud closest to the rdaitor, then remove the twisted-off ring.

Well this did indeed turn out to be the air pump bearing. I had it repaired by my indy pro shop. That damn pump costs $650. Unbeliveable!!! In fact, if you were to replace the pump, idler tensioner, belt and shock, you'd spend about $1000 in parts. Now my question is this.... Cars like my 1991 300SL are selling for around $10,000. But the sum of the replacement parts must be well over $100,000.00 Why aren't guys buying these things up to part out and sell on e-bay? Geez, it cost $700 just for the front grill. Am I crazy to be putting so much money into a car with so little value vs what it costs every time something wears out or breaks? OK, I love the car, and I know I have something where the value isn't measured in absolute dollars. But surely there is something suspect with the way repair parts are priced.

I don't buy from the dealer or indy. I buy online. Got mine for less than 200 bucks and installed myself. While I was down there, I installed an alternator too. That was $149 for a new on one, online. Took about an hour to do both.

Well because I have a 96 SL600 I'm parting out on E-bay. I'm not getting rich quick doing that and it's alot of work.
