Finnally brake dust free

Needed new brakes on my 99 SL500, and of course called Phil at Fast Lane for new rotors, the man is as good as gold.
Brake dust on is one of those things that just burned me every time I looked at my Sl's wheels, not any more. I did some research and the most common answer was Ceramic pads so I shop around and found this jewels.
AKEBONO Euro Ultra premium brake pads, in the span of 3 months my wheels show no sign of dust build up, this pads are good, strong braking no noise or vibration and no sign of exesive rotor wear actually no sign at all, and they are the same price as regular pads, now if I can find a set of Z rated tires that last longer than the factory installed Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. 20,000 miles is all I got from them I will be very happy indeed, I saw a set of BFG ZR rated tires that look just like the Michelins, but the BFG factory Rep told me that they do not make tires for my Mercedes, hard to swallow that one, anyways I figured I throw this out here for you guys that are considering buying pads.

Nice to know...too early for a change on my '07 ML, but it could sure use some pads that generate less dust!

The alloys are always caked...rears too...even if I'm driving a few miles for a quick errand!

Carlos,
Good writeup on the Akebonos...they seem to be the pad of choice for our cars. Did you change the rotors at the same time? If so, to what?

TIA,

Bob

Hi Calos, Thanks for confirming the Akebono ceramics . That's what I have decided on when making my change, mostly due to dust.

How many miles does your car have on it?
Was it your front or rear that caused you to replace all pads and rotors?
Hoe many miles where you getting out of the OE front pads?
I ask because my car has 29K and I have no idea when the fronts will need replacing.
What was your reason for replacing the rotors? Elaborate please.
Could you have had them turned and save some money?
Did you consider Silver Arrow Rotors ?

I love my Michellin PS2's but they probably would not suit your needs due to lifespan so may I suggest that you take a look at these PZero Nero's . They get good review from those in the know. Price to value!

brake pads

My 99 SL500 just turn 66,000 miles on the odometer.
I replaced the front and rear pads at 49,000 miles on the same rotors, previously a complete brake service, motor oil and transmission was performed at 31,195 miles, before that brake serviced at 9,044 .
This last time I replace them after I noticed an increased in pedal travel as the rotors became thinner and I did not like that at all so turning them was never an option. it will make them even thinner, plus they will become hot faster and not as efficient, also the pedal felt spongie and you could see the wear ridges at the edges of the rotor surfaces, ugly sight
This is my daily driver about 6 miles a day to and from work in rush hour traffic, brakes and tires are a big concern for me and of course good looks
meaning clean wheels and shinny tires and glossy paint etc.etc.
20,000 miles seems to be what a lot of people are getting for Z and ZR rated tires, some of them do not look as bad as my Michelins do, but the ride quality is lost, at least that is what my research has shown.
Michelins will show thread thru the center of the tire like over-inflation wear and the rubber will start to look like dry rot, that is what mine are looking like even though I keep my tires air pressure.

Is it possible that 32-34 PSI might be a better tire pressure than the recommended 36 PSI for the 275/35ZR18 rear?

pads & tires

This are factory recomendations for 1999 Mercedes Benz SL 500
Michelins 245/45 ZR 17
30 PSI front
33 PSI rear
For driving over 100 miles per hour add 7 PSI

So your not getting any brake dust on your wheels ? I just had my front pads replaced and wished I could have gotten ceramic pads--if they DO in fact NOT make any dust, then it would be worth it to me to upgrade these then, cause I'm sick of the brake dust on my new chrome wheels. I have to CONSTANTLY wash my wheels due to the brake dust on my 91 500sl
