Big Bump in Fuel Mileage

When going through the thrash of trying to figure out what was causing the engine to stumble on start-up, my mechanic decided to check the timing. The label on the fan blower housing says the timing should be set to 18 degrees +/- two degrees BTDC. The timing was set a eight degrees AFTER TDC. I was getting about 17 MPG around town.

My mechanic reset the timing to seven degrees BTDC and the mileage jumped up to almost 21 MPG. He has since set the timing to fourteen BTDC and will adjust it to eighteen degrees BTDC next week. Haven't noticed but about another 1/2 MPG increase, but getting the timing close to right sure gave me a decent boost in mileage...as well as pep and power.

I have no idea who set the timing at 8 degrees ATDC or why, but am glad to get it reset.
