It's the air temp sensor. On D-Jet if shorted, you'll run too lean. If unplugged, too rich. Test the resistance. The D-Jet manual has that in there.

The distributor is quite easy to remove. I can take it out and put it back on and have my engine timed in under 15 mins.

Thumbs up Great Restoration! To Meltedpanda

I may be getting a 1979 450SL by the end of the week and was wondering where did you get the leather interior from? I thought that it would already have leather interior and it doesn't but I would like to get it.

Tom, how about a few pointers on your tune up proceedure, I have never removed a distributor. Also how often SHOULD the trigger points be cleaned or replaced? In all the stuff I have found no reference to them being serviced. 134K on clock

waiting on my parts order so spent some time in the dash tonight, so many little things just not hooked up, clock, when I hooked it up it worked, little bulbs and stuff all hooked up and now working, almost like the little things did not matter, anyways I found the wires to the hirshman antenna , which looks new, red and green, just lying under the carpet, put 12V to them and it works perfect, where do they go to get it to work with the radio? This is an aftermarket radio, there is a blue line on the back marked ATT is that the Antenna power?
any pointers would be appreciated- thanks

I still have my original points, 145k... I clean them every oil change. My distributor has had the 5mm allen key bolt replaced with an 8mm standard bolt, it makes life a lot easier. Basically remove the trigger point harness, remove dizzy cap and the points plug, and then the bolt; then remember where your rotor is (IE: 3:00) and mark it if need be, then pull the dizzy. Straight out. Clean, reinstall and retime. You're good to go!

Tom,
sounds easy enough, may give it a go
well now the next deal, the fat short hose between the thermostat housing ( i think) and the manifold look bad, and is a bit wet. I need to replace it. Looks like a bear to get at, any pointers. I dont think this needs thermostat removal but where do I get such a large diameter piece of hose. None of the parts sites list it.
All the other rubber looks good.

Ron: Dizzy is what that little thing that sends sparks to your cylinders will make you when you've removed it and replaced it as many times as I have

as for the hose size I hope this is accurate enough for you: 1.65" or 42.0mm is the ID it needs to fit over (That's 1 and 13/20". Closest std size would probably be 1 and 5/8").

perfect, and thanks, a new word for my vocabulary !
Was able to hook up the electric antenna and get the dash back together tonight, now onto the seats, I have them out and hope to clean and paint the rails and get them back to working order.

Stressed!

OK so interior is done, and onto the engine. I hooked up all the bypasses the PO had rigged, such as the vacuum from the distributor and the disconnected plug at the air intake, NOW IT RUNS LIKE CRAP!. I had it at idle and then it started smoking to beat the band, reved it and it went away
SO I can understrand if this has thrown the whole system off, but please tell me if I am on the right track
Reconnect everything the way it is "suppose" to be
clean plugs - gap
adjust valves
replace points, condensor and clean trigger points
retime
WHat ELSE???
Stressed, but amazed how nice the interior and exterior looks , so that is good

What is this?

There is a device on the driver side fender about mid way that has a hose which runs from it to behind the intake manifold and dives down there into some connection there along the firewall
The hose looks worn, and I am anticipating replacing , but it too looks to be a PIA, just wondering if I should or need to do it??

Ron, that sounds like the MAP sensor, you need to have a good leak-free hose there!

Mine smoked like an oilburner today as I put a "New" manifold on. Probably because said manifold had a lot of stuff I put in there to clean out the carbon deposits and grindings (as I ground out some carbon and lumps before I installed it).

Here's what mine needs, maybe yours is the same:
- Oil change
- Plugs
- Wires
- FRESH GAS (2 years old now!)
- Valve clearance check
- MAP with more adjustable allen screw (I have 2 now for 4.5's)
- Points
- "Condenser" Wire from points to ignition box (can you say burned?)
- Dwell set
- Timing checked
- Mechanical advance lubed
- Trigger points cleaned

And that's just the engine 2 years of no real driving... My inspection sticker expired Oct of last year! AND I wasn't even driving it when I got it inspected!

Edit: Oh, what does yours sound like in comparison to http://youtube.com/watch?v=2O6chweElos

Your list is close to mine - I have new plugs and the gas in mine is good
I am also replacing rotor and cap as well as a few lines that need "help"
I just hope when it is all said and done it will run better, I really think it is way out of tune and running rich, I got to get my hands on a CO analyzer but can't afford one right now, Oh yea , time , got to find the time to get my head under the hood. Keep the info coming !

I like the U tube, I must admit mine is quieter
