Question removing CD changer from 95 SL500 trunk

Hi, new to the forum. I did a search on cd + changer + remove on the SL and tech forums but didn't get any good hits. I need to take our my cd changer because I beleive there is a cd stuck in it. The magizine will eject and load but a cd will not load from the mag, I get a loading error. When I first ejected the mag. after the cd would not play it only had 5 cd's but I'm sure I hd 6 in the mag.
I don't see any screws to release the cd changer from the mount in the trunk and it's in there pretty tight. Once loose / out, any tricks to disconnect the wire to runing to the head? Anyone with expereince with this? TIA.

Joe

In both my SL's, there are two screws on each side of the face plate that are used to hold the CD-Changer in a frame. They may be deceiving because they attach a bracket to the farme. The bracket is attached to the CD-Changer, so the screws do not initially look as if they release the CD-Changer.

Once these four screws are removed (no trick involved, just a Phillips screwdriver), the whole CD-Changer unit should slide straight up. Once the CD-Chnager is pulled out a bit, there is a cable connection at the rear (opposide side of the magazine door). Depending on the length of the cable in your SL, you may have to fumble blindly with the cable. Good news is it will only go back in one way when you reassemble.

MBDude,
Thanks for the info. I actually finally found the four screws holding the changer to the bracket. But the way my changer is in, it's impossible to get to the bottom screw closest to the trunk wall. So, I found the two screws holding the bracket in place and just removed the bracket with changer attached. Then I was able to take the changer off the bracket.

Unfortunately, I was wrong, there was no disk stuck in the cd player. While I had the player cover off, I pluged it back in and loaded a mag. One by one the changer loaded the cd's, they spun up, stopped, and spun up again then the changer ejected it and went to the next one. After all six had been loaded and ejected, all with "Load Error", the head just showed CD 0. Looks like the laser is not picking up.

So guys, is it time for a new changer or does anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks.

Joe

Yup... Had the same problem a couple years back with my CD-Changer. For a replacement, I recommend Fast Track Electronics... http://gofte.com/ItemsPriceSheetMBZ.htm

Have dealt with them for years and have replaced a number of head units and a CD-Changer with them. Never had one of their units fail and their service is good.

I'd try cleaning the laser lens first. Use a Q-tip dipped in windex to gently wash the surface of the lens. Often they get so dirty with dust the laser can't focus properly.

MB-Dude, Tecqboy,

Thanks for the responses. I'll try cleaning the laser lens but it looked pretty dust free to me. I'll let you know the results.
