MB Newbee w/silly question

So, I'm reading & reading & reading on different issues that I'm experiencing w/my 80 450SL (which of course I love to death) & think I know what some of the issues are so off to find parts. I get parts & then see things like
For models with chassis serial number from 053366

How do I know if my model has this chassis serial number? Is this a from 053366 on up? I'm just use to being able to select my year, make, model & here's your part.

Thanks for any assistance.

I think I might have figured it out. Are they referring to the last 6 digits of the VIN #?

You are correct...

so - if the last 6 digits of your vin starts with or is higher than that number , that would be the correct part selection. Lower than that means the part was changed slightly (or even seriously chnaged) and will not be the correct part for you particular engine.

FYI, engines are the same way. Whenever getting parts for a Mercedes, always have the chassis VIN number and the engine serial number handy. Mercedes many times makes changes mid-year rather then at the beginning of a model year.

Not positive on the '92, but on the previous 560 and 500 engines it is located at the rear of the engine, behind the left valve cover (from the driver's seat) on a flat spot on the engine block ahead of where the transmission bolts on. Most likely in the same place on your car. It is a real pain to see, especially if it is dirty.
