Sl500 Vs. Sl600
Okay, Here's The 100,000 Dollar Question. I Am Thinking Of Selling My 00 Sl 500 Sport With 31k On It For A 1998 To 2002 Sl600 . Is The Switch Worth The Trouble? I Only Drive This Car About 3k A Tear And Have Always Wanted The V12 But Stayed Away Because Of The Possible Maintenance Issues. Also My Last 2 Sl500 Have Been The Same Color And Just Possibly Looking For A Change But In 6 Months Don't Want To Be Saying To Myself " Well That Was Stupid". Thanks

Can't see any real advantage to the 600. I think the higher weight of the 600 negates the performance advantage, so it's kind of a tossup between the two. I also have lusted for a 600, but cooler heads always prevail. I do love the 500 and it still has more motor than I have skill.

Ask Power Pig.
He has a 380SL and an SL600 and he might be able to give you an unbiased assement.

If I had a dollar for every time someone asked this question, I would have $100,000! I have an SL320, 380SL, 450SL and a SL600. No major probs with any so far. The SL320 is a great daily driver and I drive the older ones when the wife wants to go cruising as she likes them. The SL600 is stupid fast and is a great driver. I drove it to work three days this past week and it did great in the Africa hot weather we had in the DC area. For sheer driveability and power, the SL600 is hard to beat. I will probably never get rid of it. All I`ve done in the past 1.8 years I`ve owned it has have regular oil changes. Hope this helps.

The 500 is better balanced more suited for that car, and the performance advantage of the 600 isn't that much and could be outweighed by incrfeased maintanance problems.
You could put V12 and 600 badges on it, for a cheap way to get the prestige on it. I'd doubt there would be much of a resale advantage with the 600, and by keeping your 500 you already know what you have, and not have to worry about typical used car problems the 600 might have. You could certainly upgrade your wheels, stereo, and put some SL Silver Arrow options on the SL that you liked, to customize it (though you won't get anything in resale value by doing it)

Performance, Prestige, Pride
The three main reasons we drive these Mercedes Monsters and most likely in the correct order. I have owned 1985 380SL, 1989 560SL, 1994 E500 and currently 2001 SL600. The 85 was underpowered, The 89 was a great car offering simplicity and the feeling of power verses the 85. The E500 introduced me to the meaning of Torque along with speed. The SL600 is the Pinnacle of mating Torque, Speed and Class. I have many friends with Sl500s in their stable that have driven my Sl600 and said they could easily notice the difference in power and interior fit and finish.
The final reason is that some day you will want to sell it and you will put it on Autotrader. If you go on autotrader and put in 2000-2002 SL600 under 45K on nationwide search, you will find only 8-10 vehicles available. If you put the same criteria in for SL500, you will get 123 or more. The SL600 new with Pano Top topped out at $139K in 2001. The SL500 with Pano Top option topped out at $99K. Today the 2001 SL600 sells for $30-$40K, The 2001 SL500 sells pretty much in the same or a 1000 or two lower. Its a no brainer IMHO of course Disclosure: yes my SL600 is for sale |
