Gear shift lever replacement
I have an 88 560SL (chassis 107) and want to replace the old gearshift lever with a new one with a wooden knob. I realize that there is a locking nut under the console that has to be loosened and have seen some similar procedures for this process for other models BUT I am concerned that given the car's age that i will miss a critical step and break something. It appears that the gearshift plate and possibly the wooden console must be removed.....anyone have the procedure.....thx in advance.

Quote:
-Remove the two screws -Remove the ashtray frame -Remove the side mirror adjust switch -Remove the two new screws under the ashtray frame -Lift up the and push backwards on the wood and it should come right off then; -Remove the 4 screws that holds the shift gate in place Once you to that point you will see the shifter go into the shift link assembly. There is a counter nut that you need to loosen and then the shifter can be unscrewed. You will still have to deal with the rubber boot and get that moved over to the new shifter.....or as in my case; have to buy a new one since it was worn. Reverse to assemble.... |
