I love this website!
I have a 1986 560SL with only 70k. It is making a valve niose. Not bad but I do Know it was not there last summer. I would like to know if the valves are adjustable or not. and if they are where can I go in the web to find the proper clearance. or will I be smarter just to take it to someone. Thank you. |

I know nothing about big engines (the Dutch drive small sized only), but I guess that the 560SL has hydraulic lifters like almost all other MB engines since the early/half 80s...
Hydraulic lifters are not adjustable. greetingz,

The hydraulic lifters use a spacer under the rocker to compensate for variation in lifter dimensions. As the cam lobe wears (could be stopped up oil gallery or cracked plastic piece on oil gallery feed tube)you could experience measurement beyond the parameter that is compensated by hydraulic lifter. The spacers come in several different thicknesses for correct spacing of each lifter. Easy to check. Find shop willing to take time to do it. But first, check out why the problem has developed as listed above.

Yes, there is a procedure.
The procedure is “Adjusting Basic Position of Hydraulic Valve Compensators”. It is a bucket and shim set-up.
