I am looking at a 1987 560 SL with 37K miles. It generally looks great. However, on the floor behind the passenger seat under the carpet there is some sand, and a plug under the carpet behind the driver's seat is missing. Do you think the missing plug indicates major leakage problems in the past? How could sand have gotten under the carpet? Anything to be concerned about?

Sand gets in a convertible very easy and settles under the seats where there is no wind.
My 1990 300SL-24 had a lot of candy and crap under the seats (the previous owner did not take care of the car properly; he was not worth the car!), that is nothing to be concerned about. A missing plug...no idea. If the plug was taken out because there WAS water on the floor, they would have put it back in again after the car dried up again... greetingz,
