95 SL500 Overload relay
 
I recently purchased a new overload relay for my 95 SL500. (part# P2056-18126) I am having trouble locating the relay to replace it. Roy seemed to think it was located on the passenger side under the hood. I have searched everywhere including the main fuse and relay box on the drivers side under the hood. None of the relays in the box resemble the replacement part that I ordered. It may be the wrong one. Can someone tell me where I can find the relay.

In my 1991 300SL it is on the passenger side under the hood under the large plastic cover between the windshield and the strut mount. My cover is held down by 5 philips screws. All of the important engine electronics are in that compartment. Your newer model may be different.

Thanks for the reply, my SL500 has a similar plastic cover on the passenger side under the hood. Under it is a large aluminum box. I took the cover off of that and found several plug in modules. None of them resembled the part I am trying to replace. One of those modules may indeed be the overload relay that I am looking for. If so I can track one down by the part number if I can figure out which one it is.

Only early R129s have an over-voltage protection relay (OVP). On a '95 over-voltage protection is one of the functions of the Base Module. That module is located in the compartment mentioned by tecqboy and has several fuses plugged into the top of it.

Bobterry99,

Thanks, I called Roy with the numbers off of that module. That is the module that has the 4 10amp fuses on top of it. The part number indicates that it is a relay module. I have no way of knowing if that is causing my problem . Roy recommended that I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, cranckshaft position sensor and the fuel pump relay in the fuse box which I have done. The car is running fine right now. I was having problems with it stalling out after warm up when the outside temp was 90 degrees or more. It would also not start back up until it cooled down. I will continue to drive it without replacing that module and see if I have tht problem again. If not, I'm good for now. That module is over $500 so I would rather not replace it.
