SL 500 Reverse Gear Lag

When on a slope with nose down hill, I put car into reverse and car rolls forward about 18 inches before reverse gear engages and car begins to back up. Aside from being disconcerting, I fear this means tranny is about ready to pop.

Is there a quick cheapo fix to this, or am i doomed? what is the fix?

W

Winsteadi,
Does this slow reverse engagement occur if you keep your foot on the brake while shifting into reverse?

Yes and no. I usually have the foot on the brake when i throw the car into reverse. I then let off and the car rolls forward about 20 inches before the gear engages.

Win,

When was the last time that you had your transmission serviced?

Just purchased - plan on having it done within the week. Will go to a delaer shop rather than independent. Presumably will get an honest assessment.

Checked fluid, which is ok re: level, color and smell.
