I have a 1983 380 sl, I went to the pick and pull and removed a head from a 420sel and it fit my sl. replaced a couple of camshafts couple of years later and they fit as well.

All 420 SEL have M116, not M117.

The heads from M117 aluminum block engines will BOLT to the M116 aluminum block engines. The combustion chamber volumes, the valve sizes, and the exhaust manifold bolt patterns, in particular, of the M117 differ from those of the M116.

M117 head on an M116 will result in a compression drop, pretty drastic too, like two atmospheres or three. M116 heads on an M117 gives you like 12.5:1 compression ratio.
