California or Bust

I am in the preliminary stages of planning a trip next summer that will take me from Toronto to Vancouver to California to Vegas and back to Toronto. All in my 1983 280 SL. I will be going solo but my wife wants to fly to San Francisco and meet me for a few days.
I will meet up with anyone along the way who wants to join in for whole or part of the trip. I will camp, motel and hopefully the odd couch. Let me know. I am posting on other sites as well.

Chris

Negotiations ended early this morning and the outcome has been committed to paper and filed with the proper authorities.
3 weeks it is.
I will be leaving on my adventure June 24 and returning July 21.
I figure I will be in Vancouver June 29 and San Fran July 4, LA maybe July 7.
I also want to jaunt over to Vegas . I don't care how I thread my way home to Toronto after that.

6,600 miles according to Google Maps... fantastic.

The return journey from Las Vegas to Toronto offers a wealth of possibilities. I see the direct route is through Colorado and Iowa, but St Louis has always appealed to me, or a route up the east coast through the great cities.

When you stop in San Francisco, you should hook up with CMAC2012 and JimB. I did when I was there a few weeks ago. They are two great guys and made my visit to their city memorable. I was only disappointed that I couldn't hang out with them longer.

Your trip sounds like a blast. I hope you have a great time. Put some pictures up here along the way like JJ did on his trip to Italy.

Let me see if I have this correct. You plan to drive, wiilingly, into the S.F. Bay Area on 4th of July weekend. Here's a better plan. Stay home, have your wife beat you with a rubber chicken while stabbing yourself in the eye repeatedly with an icepick. You'll have a more enjoyable time. If that doesn't dissuade you, you are a true 107 driver. Also, see our earlier answer to your post on oursl.com about staying in the Valley and First Sunday Drives (July 6)

I was just thinking about your proposed journey...

Obviously you'll drive down Route 101 along the Pacific coast, right? Big Sur and all that? I once visited Monterey and Carmel and they were nice spots; and further in land Yosemite was one of the most beatiful places I've ever been. The back road cross-country routes that we took around that area were amazing, albeit slow. We cut cross-country from Yosemite to Monterey and it reminded me a lot of my native Northumberland, only bigger...

I love Yosemite and driving down Hwy 1 on the coast of CA is really beautiful. I've down it several times and highly recommend it.

Does it really matter where I drive in the USA July 4?

Thank you all for the suggestions. You have an idea of my dates so pencil me in.
I will plan the exact route as I get closer to departure.
