450 SL vacuum leak
My 73 450SL (M117 engine) has been a rough idler for some time. I've been looking for vacuum leaks and finally found one in the intake manifold. Turns out there's an upper and a lower "intake pipe" connected with rubber seals. At least one of these seals seems to be leaking so I'll have to remove the entire manifold. Anyone ever done this that can give me any tips or tell me anything about all this? Thanks in advance.

mine seems to do the same, Mine has improved with injector rebuild and new lines throughout but I am wondering which line you are talking about? Perhpas I missed it . Can you give more details?
Perhaps we can tackle it together ( by email that is)

Mine's a 74 SL and I have been working on replacing those black rubber links on alot of the vacume lines recently. My car has a vacume line coming our right near the air intake, and then another one down under the intake manifold near the firewall. The one under the intake manifold (very hard to see) has a metal line that runs down to the transmission and a rubber line that comes off the same connection. This line can be removed from the intake manifold by unscrewing it. I used a dental mirror to see it, and a socket wrench with an extra long socket to unscrew it. I think I lost a small aluminum washer when I unscrewed it., but i really don't know for sure. When I put it back together I used one of the washers from the transmission end to replace it, and at the transmission end I made a paper washer out of gasket paper.

The seals I'm talking about are between the upper and lower portions of the intake manifold. The manifold is made of two castings, an upper and a lower. There are at least 4, maybe 8 rubber o-ring like seals between the two castings. They're forward and aft of the throttle body gasket. You gotta look deep down in there to see them. Spray some carb cleaner in there though, and I hear a definite idle speed change.
