Need a front license plate bracket for SL W129. Please help!

Hi,
I own 1997 SL600.
Car was originally purchased in TX, where no front plate is required. Now, I have to register it in NJ, and pass inspection
There was never a bracket, dealer didn't supply one initially, and there are no holes in the bumper.
Any bracket from 1996-1999 SL320,500,600 would do, I think. Although the car is black, at this point, I would take any bracket available...;)
If anyone out there has one to spare, please offer it to me!!!!
Cheers to all,

If you have a AMG Sport body style then you need

AMG Sport Bumper License Plate Bracket unpainted
p/n WA1298850381 $226.00 US list

If you have a Standard body style please check
Russian Parts Site>129.076>88 Attachment Parts>030 Front Bumper

Note: always confirm the p/n with your VIN when placing an order.

You might try calling these guys, they sell aftermarket ones for many models on ebay...perhaps they have the correct one for your car. I ran into the same trouble when I bought my E300 but a helpful board member gave me one and saved me the trouble of tracking one down.

Thanks a lot, guys!
Unfortunately, I've already asked the ebay seller you mention, and a few others, submitted a query thru automix.net, looked all over, nobody has it :o

Now, I'll try to search with the part number (I have a regular body style, not AMG), will see how that goes...

Thanks again!

Part is found (and bought), good stuff!
Thanks again, guys!

Cheers,
-Alex.

I have a 97 SL500 non-AMG also from a "no front plate" jurisdiction.
Searched on that part number but no luck....
Could you share your source please?

Thanks

Since I don't know your geographical location I suggest that you check out
Russian Parts Site>129.067>88 Attachment Parts>030 Front Bumper

Ray652, just go to our very own http://www.peachparts.com
or contact Phil directly at 1 888 333 4642.
You'd need a part number, which is 1298850981, and a color code of your car (yeap, this is a luxury vehicle indeed, hence the bracket is painted with your car's original color ;)).
Should run you about $80 (domestic shipping included).
Cheers,
-Alex.

thanks Lynn and Alex.

I am in Canada but right on the US border so I will go the US route.
Does the color come from the VIN or is it enough to say 97 SL500 Red?
I assume there was only one red that year??
I just bought "touch-up" paint from MB and maybe the receipt has the correct # as the parts guy went outside to inspect the car?
I painted my Sirius satellite antenna red and now it blends perfectly.
Been driving for 2 months without a front plate so I better get one quick.

Thanks for the help.

Ray

Ray, please use your car's VIN when ordering most anything for your car. And never, never use factory touch-up paint again. Please read No going back to factory touch-up paint.

BTW, my guess is that you have a 582 Imperial Red. But please verify!

Lynn, I only bought the "touch-up" paint to paint the satellite antenna.
I did not use it on the car.
I will get myself the kit you suggested since everyone seems to be happy with its performance. Yes thats the color....I remember the MB guy saying that

Thanks

Your car is absolutely beautiful and with that deep red. And black interior too! Congratulations on a great find and welcome to the R129 club.

Why don't you consider holding off on putting the license frame on the car until someone makes you? You don't show the front end but I'm sure it looks cleaner w/o the plate. Here's a picture of the front end of my car.

Well, this car never had a front plate. I bought it from the original owner @ 28,000 miles 2 months ago. I am required by law to display a front plate, however I have seen some people trim the front plate down to the actual # and I may do that.... tabs are on the rear plate Since most every car lately seems to be behind me, I have not been caught yet. Yes, I thought I enjoyed my 98 E300 that I bought new but this car has a whole different effect on me. Nothing like the open road and Fleetwood Mac's "Rhianna" doing its thing!

Life is short - we are here for a good time - not a long time! :beerchug:

Ray, CA also requires front plates but have never been ticketed and will not put the holder on until I have too. It would be a CA Hwy Patrol that would that would give me a fix it ticket probably when he pulled me over for speeding. Local cops don't care.

Don't do it. Your car looks to good right now.

Yes..... top down, windows and windstop/screen up, cruzin at 80 MPH, with Fleetwood Mac.
At 68-70 degrees Nothin' Could be Better!!!!!! .

Lynn, the BIG diference is that I am sure any cop here is likely to treat you somewhat differently than they would treat me!! I intend to go the "cut plate" way and hide it in front below the bumper almost out of site.

As for the temperature....I am at the WRONG end of Interstate 5!!!!
Raining, windy and 48 degrees today!! Hard top will be on till June at the earliest....DARN!!!
