560SL diagnostic port/tool

My '88 560SL has a nine pin diagnostic port under the hood. I seem to recall reading on one of these forums that you could build your own to read the light pulses to determine problems. My particular concern right now is with the SRS light being on all the time. Can anyone provide me with information on how to build a reader or where to buy one?

Thanks.

Finally got the info I needed. Thanks to MBDOC and Deanyel I found my second diagnostic port, built a code reader and determined that I've got a bad airbag control module

Do you have any details on this you could share? Where is the second port located and do you have any diagrams on how to build the code reader?

Be happy to give you the info I got. Probably a good idea to have it all in one place anyway. Keep in mind I'm talking about my '88 560SL here. Not sure all years have things in the same location. I found the nine pin diagnostic port on the driver's side fender well. It has a screw on cap. See first photo. This diagnostic port reads engine duty cycles only. You can buy a multimeter that has the duty cycle function or if you have a dwell meter, you can use that since it also reads duty cycles.

The second diagnostic port was right in front of me, but much as I looked, I couldn't find the damn thing. See second photo. It is about three inches forward of the first diagnostic port on the driver's side fender also. It is covered with a plastic cap that deceived me into thinking it was something else. Many have said that they found this second diagnostic port on the passenger side on the firewall on other Mercedes of that same era. This second diagnostic port is the one you need the blink code reader for.

The following links will describe the parts needed to build your own code reader and instructions on how to do it. I bought all of my supplies at Radio Shack for under twenty bucks and built it in an hour or so.

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/1039/mercedes/cs1000_mb.pdf. These are the instructions from Mercedes for using the code reader. Only pages 9, 10 and 113 applied to me.

http://k6jrf.com/MB_X11.html. This is a good page on code reader's in general and also gives the procedure and parts needed to build your own.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/chwilka/Error_Code%20_reader_reset_tool.htm. This one takes you through the SRS problem on an '89 560SEC and has some good pictures and instructions.

That ought to do it.

After building a code reader and testing the SRS system, I get a #2 error code that according to the codes tells me that the control unit is bad. I want to verify with someone in the know before I commit to buying a new/used part. It is my belief that the control unit the error code is referring to is the sensor located behind the climate control unit in the dash. My original unit shows part #003 820 73 10. That part has been replaced by part #004 820 17 20 and then by part #000 820 68 26 according to the EPC. The EPC also shows a condenser (energy reserve) and a voltage transformer electrical unit that look like they are located somewhere behind the driver's door. I guess one could possibly call these control units too. There is an error code for voltage supply which I would guess may refer to a bad voltage transformer. I see no error code that would lead me to the condenser.

Can someone please verify for me that error code #2, control unit, refers to the part behind the climate control unit like I think it does? I don't want to throw money away at a part I don't really need.

Sometime in the past I thought that I had read on one of the forums that bad slip rings and brushes in the steering wheel can cause an SRS error code pointing toward the control module. But I can't remember the details.

That's true and that's what was suggested to me. However, I was skeptical since the car only had 40,000 miles on it. But I took the steering wheel off anyway and looked. The contacts all looked good to me. Since I'm not one to throw parts at a problem until it eventually gets fixed, I decided to do it the right way and read the codes. One of the error codes would indicate bad contacts, but I never got that one. I only code I got was the one for the control unit which turned out to be the issue. That's the purpose and beauty of the codes and using the code reader.

I have a 1987 560SL with 51,000 miles on the clock. My SRS light flashes faintly on and off, mainly when I'm turning the steering wheel. Mine is a California car but I haven't pulled the codes on it, but I can almost guarantee that my issue is a brushes/spiral contact issue as it only happens when I turn the steering wheel rightward.

I need to pull the wheel and take a Q-tip and apply some dielectric grease to the spiral contacts to improve the SRS electrical contact.

Your posts are informative Len. I still wince when I see the photos of your car.
