Does anyone have this problem,or is it just me?

Folks,

My '79, 450 SLC, 4.5Ltr, V-8, w/98K orig miles, engine will race when I start it when cold, but not necessarily cold outside. This process takes quite a while before it finally drops to normal idle. The idle speed will increase to 15-1600RPMS until the engine warms. THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

My old ford would do this with the automatic choke! They outlawed automatic chokes years ago!

Pls advise

Thanks

Then it's certainly a good thing your car doesn't have one. Especially seeing as how a choke only works on a carburetor and your car is fuel injected.

Do a search for "Bosch K Jetronic" and you'll find a wealth of information.

I dident realize they outlawed automatic chokes. I thought they just died with the carburator.

In any case I dont recall if you have a thermostatic idel air bybass valve or electronic. This is definitly not normal for electronic but may be OK for thermostatic. The thermostatic is essentially an electrically heated coil that closes down an air bypass valve with increasing time. Just like an automatic chock does with a fast idel cam. Therefore they act the same. The only real difference if you dont have to kick the pedal to get it off fast idel.
