Anyone else w/ my 110.986 engine?
 

Hi All,
I'm a newbie (first vintage car) , a 79' AMG 280Sl (euro). It has a 110.986 engine. Anyone else out there have this engine? Im hunting for the engine manual for it but meanwhile would appreciate any comment you may have on its strengths, weaknesses or general tips. She is idling too fast but ill get around to addressing that soon. thanks! jp

It is generally considered by mb mechanics to be one of the most durable engines ever built. It rivals or equals the 616 617 diesels. When set up correctly is very very trouble free, smooth, powerful and torquey. it is not an economy engine though.

Thanks for your kind words Tom. Excellent news for me from your response! I just picked this car up about 2 weeks ago and I cant believe how excited about it I am and the interest I have in keeping it nice and improving it. It is in very nice shape with a bit over 100k mi. The engine is a bit noisy so I want to learn how to adjust the valves and change all the fluids. It just got tuned up but is idling fast and has a bit of a chatter. Its a hardtop convert and has little rust if any. I was able this past week to contact the previous owner and will get the maint records from him this week. Nobby and Dave have been very helpful on the oursl board.
I gotta get that green antifreeze out and flush the power steering fluid. Hmmm maybe Thanksgiving morning while the old lady is cookin' ;-) . regards, jp

The solid lifters are kindof noisy compared to a modern motor.
