A few new pics

I finally found a replacement steering wheel for my original AMG wheel; thanks Bruce Mendel! Consequently, I took the car out for a spin and took a few new shots while I was out and about:

I've never been partial to the SL cars, but every single time I see it I just think.."Damn, I'd love to get a hold of that car". As I've said before, "That car, is truely a work of art".
She looks great, and if you ever get the itch to sell her, due to boredom (Long-shot I know..) or for practical reasons, just let me know. Beautiful shots.

Nice looking car. Is it a four or five speed. I imagine it will haul with the manual tranny.

Bruce Mendel is a member here who deals with the Japanese on a lot of AMG stuff. It's a five-speed and it does haul butt. Thanks for the compliments - I like the car too.

Brian,

Your AMG looks fabulous, I would love to see it in the flesh. I can remember AMG's in the city of London back in the 1980's (I'm a Brit), I'm sure they were never that clean!

If you fancy a Starbucks sometime, let me know, I would love to meet up for a closer look

John

I never realized you were in Houston - I'd love to do that on a pretty morning!

So, the car has a V-8 in it, and a manual transmission..?
That sounds like the answer the dilemma a lot of us are in.

All I need to know is which model standard trans, flywheel, and some other details the car is equipt with, and I can convert my AMG 560 SEC, to a stick shift, after I purchase the correct components from wherever I find them.

I was under the impression that NO V-8 gas job Mercedes ever had a stick shift option available. Guess I've been Misinformed...

You were right, Nick. There were no V8s with the manual tranny; mine was converted by AMG in 1983. The tranny is a Getrag 265 close-ratio with a dogleg; it's a great racing transmission, but for a cruiser you probably ought to get your hands on a 260 because it has an overdrive rather than a 1:1 fifth. The only issue remaining is that I don't know where the bellhousing came from.

There's been lots of MB V8 sticks, just not in the U.S. market and not for quite a while, such as - 111 coupes with 3.5, 109 sedans with 3.5, 107s with 3.5 - all were 116 motors, never a 117 motor. The 107 3.5 sticks were made into the late 70s somewhere in the world, nothing since then. I've owned two 111 coupes with a 3.5 and a stick. They are not rocket ships but are fun to drive and quite durable.

Yes, but picture my 88 560 SEC, AMG, Euro (A rocket as it stands with an automatic in it) with a 5 speed in it, or even better, a T-56, Six speed in it...WOW..

Now that would make it a possibly faster, and definately a whole lot more fun to drive car.

Do you think there's a Mercedes stick shift tranny, that could handle the torque, and horses of the 6.0 litre V-8..?

Nick

I would stay with the 1:1 fifth because these cars already have a high enough (numberically low) rear end. Essentially they are all ready in over drive. Plus the close ratio box means you are essentially raising your first gear. It is likely the 4 spd auto will out perform this box off the line due to its extreamly low first gear. veres the 5 speeds more than likely not so low.

Also cruising in 1:1 makes for a quieter more efficient transmission than an overdrive or reduction, since the transmission essentially becomes a straight shaft in 1:1. Over drive is just a sales gimick.

Bell housing probably came from a 350SL or was custom made by AMG.

Thank you, sir. Drove it today; while flying down the Loop 610 in Houston, I turned to my wife and said "I always wanted a Ferrari - this car's better than a Ferrari."

I love driving that thing - it's an experience.
