Question SL 500 Fuel Gage

I have just purchased a 1999 SL 500 with 23K miles. The only issue I have with the car is the "erratic" fuel gage. It does not always read correctly. Sometimes when I fill up with fuel the gage does not always read correctly. I can turn the ignition off and sometimes it reads correctly and sometimes it does not. I would appreciate any suggestions on where to look for the fix.
Other than this hopefully minor problem the car is absolutely fantastic!

Thanks,

It will probably end up being a bad fuel sensor just like mine did. The dealer can quickly determine the cause and repair cost. Make sure you take it in with less than a 1/4 of a tank to make it easier to service. Mine was doing the same thing 4 years ago and has been flawless since replacement. Fuel causes varnish to build up on the sensor winding.
