Who can identify mystery tool?
 

One of a bunch of Mercedes tools that I bought. It has KMC stamped inside a square diamond shaped box. Has a part number that looks like a Mercedes part number 711 589 01 01 00. Set up for ½ inch drive with the wrench end being 14mm.
Please help me identify this tool. Car model, engine and the what the tool would be used for. I believe it is a tool for a gas engine not diesel.

Based on the number and what I've seen of MB tool part numbers, I'd guess it's a tool specialized for a 1976-1980 450SL. My car, but sorry I don't know where I'd use that tool. I've been over most of the body, all of the interior, but only the outsidey bits of the engine. I don't think it would be for anything related to the fuel/air/valves/power steering/suspension. That's as deep as I've gotten.

It seems like I've seen a call out for it somewhere in the service CD, but I can't remember where. If I stumble across it I'll let you know. Maybe it would have made a job I've already done easier?

Are there a lot of tools that are unique to Mercedes? More so than for other manufacturers?

There are a lot of jobs that can be done easier by using the MB tool. They can still be done with regular tools.

For example, dropping the transmission calls out a model-specific cradle for the jack. You don't have to have it to drop the transmission, but it might make things easier if you did.

its for adjusting valves m111 or 280 engine or something like that.

I would like to buy it , if at all possible.
It is to adjust the ball sockets on 127/129 engines. The 130 engine used the same tool with a 17mm size.

I posted in 3 areas from the responses I have recieved so far lean towards a valve adjusting crowfoot as it is similar in function to the 17mm one used on the V8s.
One person (in UK) said it showed up as no longer available but did not give any other info. When I searched by part numbers I also found nothing so far. One member said for gas engine car before 1971. So far looks like it is a valve adjusting tool for an older vehicle. If it was not for the part number on it I might not have believed it was a special tool for Mercedes.

It is possible. Unfortunately so far the tool number is not showing up in any of the places that I have look. One member from the UK said it showed up as a tool no longer available.

Look at the marks on it where the 1/2" drive connects and on the wrench end too. Those markings didn't come from the torque used to do a little valve adjustment unless the tool is made from aluminum.

That is correct..the original was 111-589-00-01-00 and , as as I stated, it is for the ball socket valve adjusters on the early IL-6 engines , up to M130
[ which is when they went to the larger 17mm ball sockets]

Please take a closer look the 1/2 inch drive end is not messed up. When they made the tool they drilled a slightly oversized hole down through the center before they made the squared part.

It is the 14mm end that has the flaw..very common b/c you have to have the tool square on the ball pins or the wrench/pin will round off..you can see this has happened to this tool.
The reason for the tool offset is b/c the ball sockets are friction thread locking and in order to get the correct torque specifications on each one, the 1/2" drive has to be geometrically in-line with the ball socket.
There are several different makes off this tool..I have a small collection including the first one I bought in 1965..these were a Must Tool for that adjustment back then.
