Where's #1 on the Dizzy?
While removing the intake manifold on my M117 V8 to fix a vaccuum leak, I randomly unplugged the spark plug wires from the distributor without noting which was #1. In reviewing some photos I took before I took this all apart, it appears that I had two crossed wires. Is it possible that I could have mixed up my plug wires (specifically I think I crossed 8 & 3) but that the engine was still running? Rough idle but fine at freeway speed? I've been chasing this rough idle for months now and had found a vaccuum leak in the intake manifold. But now I'm wondering if it may have been due to crossed plug wires all along? I'm planning to re-wire it in the correct order when I re-assemble but it will most definitely be different than it was when I started. Can anyone identify for me which lobe on the dizzy is #1?

There should be a small mark on the top surface of the distributor housing that indicates where #1 plug wire goes.
As to your question about 8 and 3. No, the engine could not possibly have run smoothly or had much power. If 8 and 3 were switched, 3 would be firing at the beginning of its compression stroke - it would have fuel but but it would not be compressed, which means there would be very little energy if there were any combustion at all. 8 would fire at the end of it's power stroke, doing no good at all. I had to draw some diagrams to figure this out, and I would be interested in others' conclusions.
