Pool noodles work well for a short period of time - but they tend to break down quickly. Since you have to get into the seat anyway (or you have to pay someone else to do it) - why not replace the pad with a new pad?

I agree, if you are going to take the seat apart stick to an OEM solution, If your existing seat pads have lasted circa 10 years, why not replace them? :-)

I just had the leather replaced on my 560SL by Ron's Restoration over the Thanksgiving holiday. I waited a year and a half for this treat and I am very pleased with the investment! I had the pads replaced as well and I noticed a difference in height and comfort.
One shocker during this.....the back pads are no longer available for the 560SL! What's with Mercedes these days??? This is becoming more and more common lately. The Classic Center did state that they will most likely be manufactured again but there's no time frame on this. Fortunately, Ron was able to get one and this was used on the drivers seat, while the passenger seat back pad was still good. It should be noted that removal and disassembly of the SL seats (and coupes) is more complicated than the sedans (which I have done). After much debate in my head, I concluded that having an expert like Ron performing the task makes much more sense!

I've replaced a good many seat covers in both British and domestic cars in the past 40 years or so. But I never encountered any as difficult as the ones in my 560. You can do it, but be ready. And if the new pads are available replace them - you'll be glad you did.
