75 450sl Exhaust Manifold Swap
 
I am swapping out the cat-laden manifolds on my 75 450sl with a set off of a '73. What is the simplest way? Removal of the manifolds from the donor car wasn't bad on the passenger side after removal of the starter. Does anyone know an easy way on the driver's side? Do I need to pull the motor to do the swap?

I only no that on the 560SL both sides are very easy. No pulling starters or anything. Just undo the down pipes from below the rest is up top.

My main difficulty was getting to the back two nuts on the bottom of the driver's side.

:confused: It still looks like the easiest solution is to undo the motor mounts and raise the motor enough to gain access to the exhaust manifold nuts. I had to remove the studs on the donor car to get enough clearance to remove the manifolds. My experience on the Mercedes is limited, but there just doesn't appear to be enough room there at all. Does anyone have any experience withremoval or replacement of the catalytic converters on a '75 or '76 450SL???

Have you tried reaching carefully from the front of the motor? You need a longish arm and won't get much of a grip on a 6 point box end wrench, but it should work.

Also, a short socket, a 2" extension and a ratchet should fit in the little space just under the manifold. A short socket that has a built in swivel (about 6$ at sears) is helpful.

When getting the manifold back in, take care to not over tighten the bolts/nuts. This is how I started my first v8 valve job. Nothing like breaking a stud in a confined space like that.

Thank you...I'l give it a try. I may need to get someone to help who doesn't have bear paws.
