I hope I'm in the right forum......

I just bought an '80 280 SLC.

The owner bumped a deer a few weeks ago and decided to sell versus fix and I "stole" it

Anyway, it has the euro headlights which both suffered damage, 1 lens completely broken out and 1 lens cracked but the housings are fine.

The one that was smashed out is missing the little metal bulb cover "thingamajig".

I've sourced new lenses but I'm wondering if those "thingamajigs" are available or if not, are they necessary when using the new type black tipped bulbs?

I want to install the new lenses upon arrival and would like to know either way.

Thanks in advance!

Don't know what you are paying for the lenses but if it is over 100/pair, you can do better.

On the light shield, it is going to be extremely difficult or impossible to obtain this in the US, even if MB carries it as a spare part in Europe. I think that you will need this so as not to blind other drivers. Maybe you can get it off of a junked MB Euro assy, even possibly from non-107 cars. I hope you still have the clips that hold the lens on because they are also made from unobtainium.

I sourced the lenses NOS for $80 a set which I feel is the cheapest I'll ever find them. I was shocked when I saw some sources for $120+ each for the lenses and $400+ for a good used set of complete euro lights.

I doubt too that I'll never find a "light shield" as you call it. That's why I assumed I could remove the other one, reseal the new euro lenses and just use new bulbs with the black tips. The black tips seem to be the norm now and the "euro" lights in my '97 Saab have no "light shields".

The lens retaining clips are all there.

Other than the euro lights, a cracked fog light, a cracked grille and a slight hood bend, everything is okay.

His repair estimate was over $5k so he decided to sell. This estimate stated $1000 just for the euro lights!

I'll post a photo soon. Now that I have the grille removed, the damage looks worse than it had prior. I guess it's kinda like granny taking her teeth out

In all honesty, I am a firm believer in trying the dealer first. I have an 83 280 SL and have sourced every wacky part I have needed there. And MPG cuts me 15% slack on the price.
Which is why he is enjoying a nice bottle of Aussie red wine this holiday season.
