you should see it about 1cm above the inside leg of the A in your picture. its not at the very bottom of the TC but about 3 - 4cm up the curve
good luck and you should see it with no problem its highly visible

just read some of the other replies and whilst you can get to it by bumping the starter motor you only have a small window to see it so its best to use a ratchet on the front pulley nut

HI
I thought it easiest to take a picture as I have 2 450 motors and 1 350 under my deck in plastic. whilst the thread is 5mm the top has a hole for a 5mm wrench and is about 1.2 - 1.5cm wide and fills half of the grate hole. anyway hope this helps. I have never been able to get it bumping the starter, i have always used a wrench on the front bolt with a 24mm socket. other models may have a bigger grate hole so it may be easier to see.
sorry the pics are small I can send you larger ones, I also had to tip the motor on its side so its not the best picture but you can see the plug. this was on a 74 450sl
cheers
Barri

nice pics barri I think I have to go with the manual method of turning it as I have not been able to get it still using the starter- is it true that if I lift the back wheels off the ground it would turn easier? Anyway I noticed in the last pic of the drain plug there was a wet patch around the plug did you have the same probs with a leaking plug? thanks :-)

I turn the TC with a big screw driver levered against a supported part of that underneath window. Make sure you turn the engine in the correct direction.

It shouldnt make any difference if the wheels are off the gound or not as the TC is bolted to the flywheel and you need to turn the engine to turn the flywheel. with no pressure in the system very little of the tansmission is turning. the plug is just wet on mine as i drained the transmission and TC before I pulled the engine! Ive worked on a few of these and unless the plug has been disturbed its unlikely that it will suddenly start leaking. the most likely is a front seal leak in the transmission followed by a leak from the power steering blowing back to the transmission. i'd put my money on the transmission front seal though. if it is, the transmissions pull out fairly easily and the seal is a $15 part.
Chas is right it may just be easier for you to lever the TC around using the teeth on the flywheel as leverage and the crank turns clockwise when viewed from the front.
cheers and good luck

Q1. Could the plug be the cause and need a new washer? or is there another place here where it could leak from? It seems to leak the most when starting from cold then slows but will continue to leak.

I guess this is possible but it is what I call wish full thinking. This is most likely a transmission front seal and requires removal of the transmission

Q2. Also when measuring the AT fluid when hot what should the reading be? When we did this it is well below the bottom line on the dip stick and when cold all the way up well past the top line??

This is AFU. Wait a half hour then check it again.

Any tips would be fantastic
