Adding a cup holder for 107

Hi. I have a 86 560sl and wanting to add a cup holder. I found one that screws into the console but when I went to screw it in, it would not go in all the way. What is the console made of under the carpet? Do I want to drill a small hole or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank you.

I used one of those cheap autozone cup holders on my car, has a hook that I'm guessing should go between the window and the door, but I put it in the glove box door instead. Works pretty well, no drilling required.

I have seen very nice looking ones finished in matching wood, not cheap, that mount to the door. I've thought about this, but when you get down to it, there really isn't much room in this car for cupholders! And I'm not giving up my armrest.

I purchased the double cup holder for the console from performance products with the burlwood, it looks great and it allows you to keep your armrest unless you're using the holder. It adjusts to different size cups and loos great. I also like the fact that it stops my glass case from sliding to the out of the console when I accelerate. It was expensive but the "Beast" was worth it.

Thank u all for your suggestions. Do you have any idea what is under the carpet in the console area if I wanted to put a screw in it?

Thank you.

Nobby, is it okay to put a screw in that area? Do you work on aircraft? I sell them. Thank you.

Fpilot, the console carpet should lift right out, exposing the same plastic that the rest of the console is made of. You will see one screw towards the center rear of the console carpeted area that holds down the plastic to the steel tunnel. Should you choose to drill another hole and install a screw there should be no problems in doing so, especially if you stay in the center area. There are no brake or gas lines in this area. I have both a '79 450sl and an '82 380SL, and this holds true for both of them.

I picked up a neat cupholder in Pep Boys last Fall. It is called the "Octopus" and it is clever. It fit in the console nicely with just a slight trim of both sides of the base. I used an xacto knife. It "snaps" in place at the bottom of the console plastic by the console carpet. Comes out in seconds. It has a slot on one side for a cup handle. The plastic "wires" in the center fit any cup. You can put the console down and it's close, but does not cover it. Put the SL away before I actually tested it, but I think it will be fine. I used one of these in my 65 mustang where it sat on the console. Holds a cup fine, and is a bit weighted at the base. Cost less than $10.

Thank you Richard W and Alkraut

This is why I like this forum. People are so helpful and I get great advice! Thank you both so much. Thank you for the pics of the "Octopus." I will have to check it out and if they do not have it then at least I know I can drill a small hole in the center for the holder I have. Thank you again. I am really enjoying my baby, 1986 560sl.

Check eBay store Autonotions. Search for Burlwood CupHolder Mercedes. Yea, it's pricey at $50 or so, but it looks and works great. He will custom make it for you, matching the interior color (my 87 560SL is Dark Brown Leather) and wood. Sits nicely in the open spot under the armrest. My only complaint is that the cupholder was more like a can-holder size with black plastic inserts. I removed one of the inserts and my cup fits fine in that opening. On the other hand, the Octopus thing is a lot cheaper, but so's a Chevy.

I advise against getting the cup holders that screw onto the doors. When you make a sharp turn, the cups will tip and spill their contents.

Thumbs up

Hi, The danger in cup holders is the movement of the seat tipping it forward moves the armrest (unless you remember to move it to vertical) it can push the drink over.

I made one using two of those door hook ones mentioned above. Put them back to back attached them to a thin piece of wood that was cut to fit that little area under the arm rest. This works fine for two small bottles. The kind with caps. Simple and safe. Not the most asthetic but removable. If you only need one holder, the Octopus works well. J.

Here's a similar home-made holder constructed with 3" ABS pipe.
Not pretty, but functional.

I ordered a cup holder from this place it works great, they have 2 different types.
One of them might work for your cars.
