Wheel mismatch

I recently purchased a '92 300SL. It has 18 inch AMG wheels with wide, low profile tires. The spare is 16 inch which I assume is what originally came on the car. If I ever have a flat, is it dangerous or bad for the car to run with different size wheels even for a short distance?

Are there any other concerns with running these larger AMG wheels? Should I consider trading them for a set of 16 inch wheels?

I haven't measured yet to see if there is some speedometer error, but my impression is that it is reading about right.

It may throw the ASR out of whack, but its safe for short distances.


We have 17 inch monoblocks on the SL, and got a flat.... Put the 16 inch spare on, drove to the tire center to have it patched, and all worked out well..

Have the same set up 18 all 16 spare.

I see the larger wheels have lower profile tires so the diameter is about the same.

I have 19" Monoblocks on my S600 and had a blow out not long ago and had the 16" spare on for about 2 weeks. When I first drove the light came on but went out awhile latter after it adjusted itself. So you should be ok.

Scott, you may want to plug in the numbers from your two sets of tires into the tire calculator, if they are within 3% you should be in the clear.

Thanks. That calculator is handy. My difference came out to 3.4%.
