107 convertible versus SLC
Is there any bracing or structural difference versus the two?
The SL is built as a convertible so is the SLC the same structurally [lengthened of course] with a fixed top added? i.e; cutting the top off of an SLC wouldn't compromise structural stability? |

WHAT!?
An SLC is 14 inches longer than an SL (ALOT)... Chopping the top is NOT a good idea; a SL top will not work. Structurally, not a good idea either. Why would you do such a thing? There are so many good SL convertibles and far fewer SLCs. Chopping the roof would be a tragedy.

It's been done, and the look is unfortunate. You wind up driving something that looks like it has a helicopter landing pad on the trunk. The proportions are all wrong. If you want a convertible, get a convertible. If you have the money to do the conversion properly (custom top, both soft and hard, all the metal work, etc.) and you need to haul 4 people, buy two convertibles. Same price and much better looks.

I agree with the above replys. I've cut the roofs off of several different cars over the years, but they were not SLs. One was a toyota truck and I purchased a convertible top conversion kit. Looked great for about one year and then the doors sagged and would hardly close. The other was an old VW beetle. Looked great also, but shortly after, the whole body and frame started to sag. Convertibles are just made with extra support and once you cut the top off a hardtop, unless you have major frame work done, they will almost always start to sag within the first year or so. BUY A CONVERTIBLE and keep the SLC intacted.

The only stability I would worry about, would be of the person contemplating such an act.

There are several stiffening members added to the SL that the SLC doesn't have.

I have seen that before, and must admit, it appears to have been done nicely.
It just doesn't look right.

Nobby, you've seen it but that is my alteration to accommodate the rear eating area. I'm going to cut it before I part it out which will be soon. |

Maybe you could sell the cut off top as a hard top.
