300SL door pockets won't open

The door pockets in both doors of my 1992 300SL won't open. They were that way when I bought the car. I have tried all positions of the central locking switch. All the other compartments open. I tried to take the door panel off to see if I could spot the problem inside the door, but I can't get it off because there are screws inside the door pockets that I can't get to without opening it. Any suggestions?
